1. What is Communication?

Communication is the process of exchanging thoughts, facts and ideas between two or more people by means of verbal and non-verbal language.

 

2. What are Communication Styles?

They are the different types of communication which can be done. It is of three types:

1.          Verbal communication

2.          Non-verbal communication

3.          Visual communication

 

3. What is Verbal communication?

Verbal communication is the use of language to transfer/share information through speaking or writing. It is one of the most common types used during presentations, video conferences, phone calls, meetings and one-to-one conversations.

 

4. What are the different types of Verbal Communication?

The different types of Verbal Communication are

·         Oral communication

·         Written communication

 

5. What is Oral communication?

The process of expressing information or ideas through spoken words is known as oral communication.

 

6. What are the Advantages of Oral communication?

The advantages of Oral communication are

·         It is interpersonal and helps in building relationships.

·         It encourages involvement in team work and decision making process.

·         Oral messages provide prompt feedback.

·         It is cost efficient.

·    It is a preferred mode of communication for private or confidential matters.

 

7. What are the Disadvantages of Oral communication?

The disadvantages of oral communication are

·  In this form of communication emotions are visible and can lead to miscommunication.

·       It has no legal validity.

·   It does not provide a permanent record and the message can be easily forgotten.

·    It may be difficult for certain people to understand speech due to various accents and pace used in oral communication

 

8. What is written communication?

The process of sending messages in form of written words to convey information is known as written communication.

 

9. What are the advantages of Written Communication?

The advantages of written communication are:

·    It allows the sender to thoughtfully draft a clear and comprehensive     message

·         It has legal validity

·         It is the most suitable form of communication for long messages

 

10. What are the disadvantages of Written Communication?

The disadvantages of written communication are:

·         It requires time for drafting messages

·         It may involve postage cost

·    Feedback is not received instantly which consequently delays decision making process.

 

11. What is Non-Verbal communication?

Non-Verbal communication means communicating without the use of words, oral or written. It includes body language, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, pointing fingers, etc.

 

12. What are the different elements of Non-Verbal communication?

The different elements of non-verbal communication are

·         Facial expression

·         Gestures

·         Voice

·         Body language

·         Eye gaze

·         Physical contact

 

13. What are the advantages of Non-Verbal communication?

The advantages of non-verbal communication are

·   Physical gestures greatly help handicapped people, specially deaf and dumb

 

14. What are the disadvantages of Non-Verbal communication?

The disadvantages of non-verbal communication are

·   It is difficult to analyze a non-verbal message, thus leaving a greater chance of distortion of the message.

·        Long conversations and necessary explanations are not possible.

 

15. What is Visual Communication?

Any verbal or non-verbal communication which uses the sense of sight is visual communication.

Visual communication is the act of using photographs, videos, drawings, sketches, charts and graphs to convey information.

 

16. What are the advantages of Visual Communication?

The advantages of visual communication are:

·  Visual aids like graphs, diagrams, models make communication more meaningful

·       Visual aids make complex data easy to understand

·       Visual aids make the communication more interesting

 

17. What are the disadvantages of Visual Communication?

The disadvantages of visual communication are:

·        Some of the aids used in visual communication are costly.

·        Sometimes visual presentation of information can become complex

·  Complete and detailed information cannot be displayed through this communication method.

·  All topics or subject matters cannot be presented through visual communication.

 

18. What are the principles of Effective Communication (7Cs of communication)?

The principles of Effective Communication also known as 7Cs of communication are Clear, Concise, Concrete, Correct, Coherent, Complete and Courteous.

Clear: Be clear about what you want to say

Concise: Use simple words and say only what is needed

Concrete: Use exact words and phrases

Correct: Use correct spellings, languages and grammar.

Coherent: Your words should make sense and should be related to the main topic

Complete: Your message should have all the needed information

Courteous: Be respectful, friendly and honest.

 

19. What is Communication Cycle?

Communication cycle is the process by which a message is sent by one individual, and it passes through a chain of recipients.

 

20. How is the effectiveness of a Communication Cycle determined?

The effectiveness of a communication cycle is determined on how long it takes for the feedback to be received by the initial sender.

 

21. Name and explain the different elements of communication cycle.

The different elements of Communication cycle are:

i) Sender (Source): The person who wants to send the message

ii) Idea: The information which the sender wants to share with the receiver.

iii) Message: This is the final piece of information that is conveyed to the receiver.

iv) Encoding: This is the common language for the message selected by the sender and can be understood by the receiver.

v) Communication channel: It is the medium selected by the sender to transfer the message to the receiver.

vi) Receiver (Target): The person to whom the message is to be sent.

vii) Decoding: Interpretation of the message by the receiver.

viii) Feedback: The receiver’s response to the message.

 

22. What is Feedback?

Feedback is the final component and one of the important factors in the process of communication. It is defined as the response given by the receiver to the sender. The sender needs the response of the receiver in order to decide effectiveness of communication. Feedback can be negative or positive.

 

23. What are the features of feedback?

Features of feedback are as follows:

·      Feedback completes a communication process

·      Feedback enables us to evaluate the effectiveness of our message

·      Feedback makes communication meaningful

·     Feedback makes the sender of the message know if he/she is really making sense to what he/she is communicating

·      Feedback is a basis for future planning

 

24. What is Formative feedback?

Formative feedback is given throughout the learning process. This type of feedback is meant to determine how students are progressing through a certain learning goal and used to correct their mistakes.

 

25. What is Summative feedback?

Summative feedback is given at the end of the year or unit and is used to evaluate student’s learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some pre-determined criteria. This type of feedback is meant to evaluate a person and accordingly reward him for his good actions or punish him for his mistakes.

 

26. What is Descriptive feedback?

Descriptive feedback is specific information that help the learner understand what she or he needs to do in order to improve. It is the most powerful tool for improving student’s learning.

  

27. What is Prescriptive feedback?

Prescriptive feedback provides advice on how you should communicate.

 

28. What is Specific feedback?

Specific feedback provides detailed about something particular relating a task or the individual’s performance. It is beneficial as it gives the receiver something substantial to think about and work on the areas which need improvement.

 

29. What is Non-Specific feedback?

Non-specific feedback gives a vague response to the receiver. It is not of much help as it doesn’t guide the receiver properly to achieve the desired goal. It just says whether one is good or bad at something
